Joan Rumsey and Verni Brown

Before moving to BC, Joan had been a member of the St. Albert Trekkers Volkssport Club near Edmonton. In November 1995, she became a member of the Richmond Trailblazers Volkssport Club, and for many years, she was Club Secretary. She received the Ron Colpitts 5-year Volunteer Award from the CVF/FCV in May 2004. Joan was also a member of VVVC from February 2003. She had moved to BC to live with a man (Ken) she had met through the Cross Canada Cycle Tour Society. Joan’s longest outing with that group was a five-week cycling trip in New Zealand. After Ken passed away in 2000, Joan got together with Al Hollinger, another member of the CCCTS. They did a lot of cycling together, and Joan introduced Al to Volkswalking. A few years ago, when Joan could no longer walk very far, Al built her a personalized stroller. They participated in a number of walks in Ladner, with Al pushing Joan for the full 10K route. Joan will always be remembered for her smile, her pleasant personality, and her willingness to help out whenever and however she could. She led an active life until the last few years and she will be missed, especially by Al.
